Poznań was home to the first German concentration camp on Polish soil, and it was here that gas was first used for the mass killing of civilians. Fort VII, built in the 19th century by the Prussians, became a site of execution for thousands of Greater Poland (Wielkopolska) residents during World War II. Today, it houses the Museum of Martyrology, which can be explored with an audio guide or a live guide.
A visit to Fort VII is a deeply moving experience that leaves a lasting impression. It is challenging, much like visiting any former concentration camp. However, it is one of those places that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime.
