My name is Katarzyna Tymek and I have been a licensed city guide since 2009. I organise and guide tours of Poznan and the Piast Route – the kind of tours I would like to take part in myself. I want a walk around the city with me to be a pleasure and for my guests to remember the images and stories of the tour. I love anecdotes – they are the ones to remember. I try to tailor the content and programme of the tour to specific groups and people – something different will be heard from me by a school group and something different by company employees on a team-building walk.

The Piasts were the first Polish royal dynasty, and the Piast Route (or Piast Trail) connects the places where they lived and ruled. And Greater Poland is rightly called the cradle of the Polish state. It was here, in the fortified settlements of Poznań, Gniezno, and Ostrów Lednicki, that the Polish state was born. Five royal coronations took place in Gniezno Cathedral, while eight Piast dynasty rulers were buried in Poznań Cathedral. The region is also home to Poland’s first bishopric and archbishopric, and it is believed that Mieszko I accepted Christianity here. This is where Poland’s first stone buildings – princely palaces and cathedrals – were constructed.

One day isn’t enough to visit the entire Piast Route (which spans over 20 towns), but it’s sufficient to see its most significant sites: the Museum of the Origins of the Polish State and the Archcathedral in Gniezno (with the famous Gniezno Doors), the remains of the Piast stronghold on Lake Lednica, and the Miniature Park in Pobiedziska. For a longer tour, you can also visit the Pobiedziska Fort with its siege machines. Those who are especially determined and choose the extended option can explore the archaeological reserve in Biskupin.
