Name Day of Saint Martin Street
If you celebrate November 11 – celebrate it in Poznań!
November 11 is a very special day in Poznań – on this date, locals celebrate not only Poland’s National Independence Day, but also the Name Day of Saint Martin Street. On this day the capital of Greater Poland comes alive: a colourful parade passes through the city centre, the air is filled with the aroma of freshly baked St. Martin’s croissants, restaurants serve traditional goose dishes, and both residents and visitors join together to celebrate in a joyful atmosphere filled with local tradition. In the record year of 2023, as many as 70,000 people took part in the festivities!
No celebration in Poznań would be complete without St. Martin’s croissants – a sweet pastry filled with white poppy seed and nuts. The tradition of baking them dates back to the 19th century, and today they are protected by an EU designation of origin. In just a few days around November 11, Poznań’s bakeries sell up to 700 tons of croissants! Their fame has long crossed the borders of Greater Poland – some are even sent to other Polish and European cities.
This year, the St. Martin Street Name Day celebrations are taking on a slightly new form. Instead of the traditional parade, visitors will be invited to explore a unique open-air space filled with theatrical figures and musical attractions. Along the festival route, visitors will meet large-scale figures known from past parades – the Bamberka, Pegasus, and the famous Poznań Goats. This time, they won’t be marching down the street but will become part of an interactive setting – literally within arm’s reach and perfect for photos. Their presence will be brought to life by artistic performances, theatre shows, and concerts, filling the city centre with a festive spirit.
The change in format is motivated by a concern for the safety of all participants – this year, the event area will be fenced and classified as a mass event, in line with police recommendations. This way, everyone can enjoy the celebration in a safe and welcoming environment.
The organisers invite everyone to Adam Mickiewicz Square, the intersection of al. Niepodległości and Św. Marcin Street, and the area in front of the ZAMEK Culture Centre, where the main programme will take place. As every year, there will be plenty of cultural activities, concerts, and a market offering delicious St. Martin’s croissants.
Once again, Poznań will show that it knows how to combine tradition with modernity – celebrating together with smiles, music, and good taste.
