Cathedral Island
This historic area in Poznań holds memories of Poland’s earliest rulers. Back in the 10th century, there wasn’t a fixed capital like we have today — the capital moved with the ruler, who often frequented Poznań. It’s believed that the first brick building in Poland, the duke’s palace, was erected here. You can spot its outline depicted in an art installation near the small Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Since 968, Poznań has also been home to the first Polish bishop, Jordan, and the first necropolis of rulers. The Poznań cathedral, Poland’s first, reveals its ancient remnants in the cathedral’s vaults. But don’t miss the chance to explore the cathedral’s stunning chapels, starting with the Golden Chapel!
Nearby, the Archdiocesan Museum houses the renowned Biblical Sword of St. Peter. Just a few steps away lies the Archaeological Reserve Genius Loci, where you’ll find a cross-section of ramparts from the time of Mieszko I—a remarkable sight. You’ll be astounded by the number of oaks felled for its construction and the time it took to build!
